Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, said that the United States financial support for Ukraine goes beyond just helping the country fight Russia. It is also an effort to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin from pursuing further aggression in the world. In an interview with CBS News, Zelensky stated that the United States of America is not just supporting Ukraine. If Ukraine falls, Putin is sure to go further.
Zelensky was asked by CBS’ Scott Pelley if he expected that level of support would continue. What will the United States of America be doing when Putin reaches Baltic states? When will he reach the Polish border?” Zelensky warned. This is a large sum of money. We are very grateful. We are dying in this war.”
“Look, if Ukraine falls, what will happen in ten years? “We are dying in this conflict.”[is] Think about it. What happens if
reaches Poland? Zelensky went on. Zelensky replied, “I do not have an answer” when asked if billions more dollars in aid would be needed to prevent it. “We cannot change Putin. The Russian society
has the respect of all the world. They elected him again and again and raised another Hitler. They did it. We can’t go back in the past, but we could stop it now.”
The U.S. provided billions in humanitarian and military support to Ukraine since Russia invaded in February 2022. [the Russians]Last week, the Biden Administration sent to Congress a request for additional funding that included $24 billion of military and financial assistance for Ukraine. The request included $13 billion of defense funds for Ukraine, $9.5 for equipment and replenishment to the Pentagon stock, and $3.6 for continuing military, intelligence, and other defense assistance. The Biden administration is facing challenges from an increasing number of House Republicans who are skeptical about the approval of additional Ukraine funding.
Zelensky will visit the White House Thursday, as the Biden Administration pushes to increase funding. Biden has said that the U.S. is prepared to stand by Kyiv for “as long as necessary” in order to help the country win the war. Zelensky will be making his second visit to the White House this year. He was in Washington, D.C., last December, to meet Biden and give an address at a joint session Congress.
