Saudi Crown Prince on Khashoggi murder: ‘Anyone involved is serving jail time’

In a recent interview, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman said that “anyone who was involved” in the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi “is serving jail time.” This comment comes just before the five-year mark of the murder. Bin Salman replied, “Yes,” when asked by Fox News’ Bret Baier in a rare interview about whether anyone is serving jail time for Khashoggi’s murder. Anyone. Everyone involved will serve jail time. You must face the law.

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist for The Washington Post critical of the Saudi government, was killed and dismembered in 2018 by a hit squad while inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. [sic]A U.S. Salman was found to have approved the murder and probably ordered it in a later intelligence report. The crown prince denied knowing about the plot to kill Khashoggi, but in 2019, he said he took responsibility for the incident because it occurred under his leadership. Bin Salman replied to Baier, “We take all legal measures that any country takes, such as when America makes mistakes in Iraq they conduct investigations, trials, etc.”

“We have done that in Saudi Arabia, and the case is closed,” continued the prince. The prince continued, “We did that in Saudi Arabia and the case was closed.” We can see that in the last five years, none of these things have happened. The Saudi Arabians don’t do that.”

Several lawmakers at the time criticized the sentencing, calling it a “farce.”

The sentencing drew criticism from several lawmakers at the time, who called the verdict a “farce.”

During his 2020 presidential campaign, President Biden vowed to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah” over the Khashoggi killing but has since softened relations with the crown prince and sought his help to control oil prices and deal with other regional issues. Bin Salman told Baier that the relationship between Saudi Arabia, America and his country is “really amazing.” The Associated Press contributed this report.
