New York Democrat tests positive for COVID-19

Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) announced Monday he will not be returning to Congress this week after he tested positive for COVID-19.

“This morning, I tested positive for COVID-19. I am experiencing only mild symptoms and will continue to isolate at home in the Bronx in accordance with the latest CDC guidelines,” Torres said in a statement.

The New York Democrat is the latest lawmaker in recent weeks to test positive for the virus as cases begin to rise throughout the country. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) announced Sunday that she also tested positive for COVID-19.

Sens. Dick Durbin (D.Ill.) as well as Chris Murphy (D.Conn.) have also tested positive over the last couple of months. Congress has about three weeks to pass a continuing resolution to approve funding and avoid a government shutdown.
